Road trips are going to be popular in the summer months ahead. But we all know its going to cost us big since gas prices have doubled since last year. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to save money on gas during your road trip. These tips will allow you to enjoy your trip more and think less of the cost of the gallons of gas that you use:

1. Inflate your car tires to their proper levels. Properly inflated cars allow the engine to roll your car easily, thus not consuming a lot of gas.

2. Check your engine's air filter for clogs and defects. Your engine needs the oxygen that goes through the filter to burn fuel; less oxygen means more fuel consumption.

3. Replace cracked or defective gasoline caps. Gas evaporates quickly when gas tanks are open. Don't let your gas go down the drain!

4. Use gas cards save money on gas. Gas cards offer rebates from 2% to 5% on gas purchases, depending on the card company. Some cards even offer rebates on gasoline store purchases.

5. Go easy on the break and accelerator. Quick breaks and acceleration consumes a lot of gas.

6. Maintain a steady speed that is below the speed limit. Research study shows that your engine consumes more gas for every mph above 60mph.

7. Pack light. The heavier your car is the more gas your engine consumes.

8. Avoid idling during roadside stops. When a stop is more than five minutes, it is better to turn off the engine. Your engine also consumes gas even when it's on idle.

9. You can also save money on gas by using your car's cruise control to maintain your speed especially on the high way.

10. Plan the routes that you will take. Avoid high terrain routes when you can; your engine consumes a lot of gas in these type of terrains.
