Why Are Gas Prices So High?

Gas Prices History Knowledge Base

I need help with a project. I need a timeline of the history of gas prices. Can start at any time.? I have to speak about the subject for 5 minutes. I don't know much about this issue so any info would be helpful.I can start from the beginning or around the 70's or even from 9-11.
I am trying to research gas prices in my area. Where can I look to find a history of the local gas prices.? I would like to see the monthly flucuations in gas prices (at the pump) for about the last 20 years.
Anyone know a website where i can find a history of gas, bread and milk prices? I'm looking for a history of at least 60 years. Most sites would only have up to 30 years... Thanks in advance...
history chart of gas prices in usa? i would like to know the rise and fall of gas prices, particulaly in OK in the last 20 years
Will HIGH Gas Prices cause the "Mother Of All" SOCIAL DISASTERS , in American History? Are regular "folks" keeping heads in the sand? As an mature Sociologist, I believe gas prices will cause super-deep social problems. What do you think? I meant.... amature, but said "mature"
Why are Americans upset over gas prices? When the oil companies gave Americans the opportunity to put one of their guys in the white house almost 8 years ago, Americans jumped at the chance. George Bush has come through for his oil buddies big time: Exxon/Mobile made $10,890,000,000 PROFIT for the first quarter of this year and over $40,000,000,000 last year - the biggest profit in US history. And gas prices are up to $4.00/gallon! Way to remember your roots, George! But now many of the people who voted for and supported Bush have become flip-floppers! They decided they dont like want to funnel their money into the oil companies pockets anymore. Why? Why cant the people who voted for George be happy with the sacrifices they commited to make for the oil companies when they voted to put a Texas Oil Man in the Whitehouse?
Has anyone noticed this about gas prices? When it was a republican controlled house and senate , it took six years for the prices of gas to double, Now that is all Dem. it only took two, might i mention the lowest approval rating in the history of the house.
Is there a site that would show details of a certain date in history, such as prices of items? I want to find out prices of gas, milk, etc. on the date of my birthday. What the number one song may have been? I found a website a few years ago that would allow you to enter any specific date and it would give you all the information for the date entered.
Do you think this plan to reduce gas prices with a boycott starting on the 15th will work? Got an email saying not to buy from Exxon or Shell to force them into lowering their prices to attract customers. Think that'll work? It's possible. Here's a history lesson for ya. When I was 6 (1961) the women of America got outraged at the price of meat. It was all over the media, TV, radio and the papers. 'Don't buy meat!' Not just on a particular day but STOP completely until the prices go down. I recall eating a lot of fish chicken and pasta for about a month. They even stopped serving it at my first grade school. I grew to hate fish sticks. Know what? It WORKED! But it also scared the government. That gave the people too much power. The next target was to be sugar. But that never took off. Why? You never heard a single word about it in the MEDIA. Not a word on the TV radio or print. I've had half a dozen gas company boycott emails from frineds but not one WORD from CNN. Why, now, do you suppose THAT is? They don't want it to succeed. $4 plus by summer's real. We in CA pay $3.69.
are gas prices going to get even higher by this summer? Ok they probably will get up to $4.00 a gallon here in the U.S. However, this makes absolutely no sense to me. Exxon has made the most profit in the last 3 months than any other company is history. Which is billions of dollars. So I know they are making us pay way too much for gas. I know there is no shortage and that there is plenty of gas in Alaska that we aren't using and selling to other countries is what I've heard. On top of that there is so much oil in the middle east it's laughable. WHY ARE WE PAYING SO MUCH? I have no idea, but I do know that President Bush has been in the oil business at one time...maybe this has something to do with. I don't know. Is this all politics? No one seems to know why we are payin so much for gas. In Venezeula its .12 a gallon and its like .75 in Kuwait. Obviously they don't have to ship across the ocean, but there is no fkin shortage of gas. I use to think if people would quit driving SUVs and trucks that we could lower prices....well I was wrong. Don't give me this supply and demand BS either. We are building hundreds of ethanol plants all over the U.S. to help out with our gas guzzling society yet the gas prices still go up. Makes no fkin sense. The invasion of Iraq doesn't have a fkin thing to do with it, but that's just my opinion. Why would that raise gas prices....enlighten me!! I've heard several people say this and not one can explain themselves. I at least need one intelligent answer of why.... I've done some research and I've discovered and read numerous times that we have more oil in Alaska then all of the world....does anyone know why we aren't tapping into it? I don't and no one seems to know or even realize what we have that we aren't using. This is utterly ridiculous and we need to start asking more questions instead of bending over and taking what our government gives us. It takes $5 to bring one barrel of oil out of the ground in saudi arabia so why are we being raped?
Why are gas prices so high? I want to hear why people thing the gas prices are so high. I know that this question has been asked before but I wanted to do a more recent question because I am doing a college paper. The question is: what is an event in history that has unexpected consequences? I think that this is one of them.
Why does nobody seemed pissed that gas prices are going up? ...while oil companies likes Exxon are reporting record profits that is higher any company ever in the history of the world?
What is the turn around time for oil to get from the barrel to the gas pump? I ask because when oil prices go up, gas prices go up. But aren't we paying for gas now that the oil companies bought by the barrel however long ago, and at however lower of a price? When oil companies are posting the most profits in the history of the world, something seems a bit wrong. I think this might be one of many factors to that.
what do you people think of the lucrative gas prices? i asked that question because there are four gas stations in my area charging over tan the new jersey average. i live in hillsdale new jersey and there are two in hillsdale stations that are charging more than usual. one is valero in hillsdale and ther other is lukeoil on kinderkamack road in hillsdale. they are both charging 4.10 a gallon and i think they are ripping the people off and both are crooks. the other two stations are in park ridge new jersey on kinderkamack road and the two stations are gulf and valero. they are both charging 4.05 a gallon. well we could thank president bush for the high gas prices and he is the worst president in modern history and if anybody votes for john mccain they are uneducated and stupid. do you really want anohter four more years of disaster in washington under mccain? we are in a recession right now and the oil companies do not even care and neither does the rich.
Gas Prices - a hidden tax increase? Accoding to goverment reporting: http://www.eia.doe.gov/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/wrgp/mogas_history.html Here are the facts: Year ** Cost in Cents * Pres * % rise/fall ___ Price shift in cents 1990 __ 129.89 ________ R 1991 __ 109.81 ________ R ___ -15.46% _______ -20.08 1992 __ 108.65 ________ R ____ -1.06% ________ -1.16 1993 __ 106.73 ________ D ____ -1.77% ________ -1.92 1994 __ 107.18 ________ D _____ 0.42% _________ 0.45 1995 __ 110.33 ________ D _____ 2.94% _________ 3.15 1996 __ 119.19 ________ D _____ 8.03% _________ 8.86 1997 __ 118.87 ________ D ____ -0.27% ________ -0.32 1998 __ 101.67 ________ D ___ -14.47% _______ -17.20 1999 __ 111.60 ________ D _____ 9.77% _________ 9.93 2000 __ 146.23 ________ D ____ 31.03% ________ 34.63 2001 __ 138.38 ________ R ____ -5.37% ________ -7.85 2002 __ 131.27 ________ R ____ -5.14% ________ -7.11 2003 __ 151.58 ________ R ____ 15.47% ________ 20.31 2004 __ 181.16 ________ R ____ 19.51% ________ 29.58 2005 __ 223.96 ________ R ____ 23.63% ________ 42.80 2006 __ 253.31 ________ R ____ 13.11% ________ 29.35 2007 __ 276.71 ________ R ____ 9.24% _________ 23.40 2008 __ 310.80 ________ R ____ 12.32% ________ 34.09 And this gives us, for presidents the following: Bush I = -21.24 cents average per gallon Clinton = +37.58 cents average per gallon Bush II = +164.57 cents average per gallon So, what does this mean for you? I'm estimating a 1000 gallons of gas usage a year. For me this comes out to the following: Bush I = $212.40 DECREASE in cost Clinton = $375.80 INCREASE in cost Bush II = $1645.70 INCREASE in cost Can we get Bush I to run for election again? 'Paying for the war' That's the stupidist thing I've heard. Gasoline taxes are not paying for the war and neither are the oil companies. Seriously, are you even thinking? or are you just 'DEMOCRATIC PARTY = BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD' like some mindless dittohead? Dear God people, THINK! "printing money" Y'know, back when I first registered as a republican, 29 years ago, there was this thing called 'fiscal responsibility' where the Republican party would not, as a policy, borrow large amounts of cash and spend it like kids on spring break. The current fiscal policy is a tax increase for every taxpayer's children. I'd rather pay my way now than pretend I'm getting it for free and saddle my children with my poor fiscal management. but then, I'm a Republican, not a neo-clown. 'Gas price=environmental" I was wrong previously, THIS is the stupidist comment to date. the rise in gas prices is a result of the rise in oil prices from $20ish to $110ish a barrel. Please tell me you are registered independant, I would hate to believe you represent my Republican party. "president not responsible" Dear God people, stop and think. The price of oil is a result of the interplay of supply and demand AND any relevant political situation in the area of supply. If a president destablises a political situation in an area of production, prices rise. the Republican party I joined believed in personal responsibility, apparently neo-clowns believe in "make crap up and hope no one is paying attention' As for the ANWR, do some research, I have. According to the MOST optimistic estimates: "The agency now estimates that the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska has between 5.9 to 13.2 billion barrels of technically-recoverable oil on the federal lands in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska with a mean estimate of 9.3 billion barrels." 13.2 billion barrels of oil / 20.7 million barrels of oil used daily = 21.27 months MAX and 9.5 months MIN with 15 month AVG http://www.doi.gov/news/040122cfact.htm http://www.eia.doe.gov/neic/quickfacts/quickoil.html "What Europe Pays' FINALLY a decent point. Europe does tax their petrol more heavily and then invests the taxes in, amoung other things, public transportation. ".09 profit a gallon" someone's math skill sare lacking. We have an 83.6 mil/day habbit worldwide. There are 42 gallons of oil in a barrel. It takes about 3 gallons of oil to make 2 gallons of gas. Simple math tell us that the MOST all oil companies combined could make off of the oil consumed in the world is $208.6 billion a year if all oil was turned to gas and sold at a $0.09 cents/gallon profit. Nine oil companies made a combined $1.28 Trillion NET INCOME http://assets.opencrs.com/rpts/RL34437_20080404.pdf them poor, poor oil companies - quick, let's give them ore taxpayer moeny to soften the blow. Crystal Please list the environmental regulations that are responsible for the rise in oil prices over the last 18 years. If you can't, I have to discount your unsupported assertion.
Rising gas prices at the beginning of the holiday season, notice a pattern? Anybody else out there notice a pattern? That ever since "W's" been in office and totally screwed our relationship with OPEC (Not that it was that great to begin with), that at the beginning of the holiday season gas prices go through the "roof" and right before the apex of Christmas shopping begins and retailers are wringing there hands awaiting the onslot, gas prices dip slightly so " The Madison Avenue gang" can get theirs. Now if history serves as any guide to the future, there'll refineries going off line for maintenance and repair around the first of the year to justify gas prices going back up right after new years. Republicans need not respond (your to far gone as it is).
Gas Prices, Economy, Environment, What to do? Hi Everyone, We'll I have to say we are in a real pinch now days. Everywhere you look something aweful is happening. Gas Prices are skyrocketing ($3:45 in Michigan), the Economy is in the craper, the Enviroment is falling apart, what can we do? Personally, I'm ready to put a bullet in my head and call it a day. I love the US & what it is founded on but we've lost direction. If you look at the Constitution it says "For the People, by the People" but I think we have strayed too far away from that. It's now "For Big Business, by Special Interest". The people don't matter, and it's our own fault. I personally feel that we are all to blame and we need to start looking to our own constituion and history for the answers. If you look at why our country was formed it was due to taxation without representation. Guess what, it's happening again only with elected officials. Until we as a nation stand up together and say no more it will continue to get worse. Civil War will come.
i believe gas prices are not based on supply and demand but does this support my evidence? gas prices go up to protect government power over their citizens, citizens have made too much money over the years from the stock market (nasdaq) and we're feeling the effects of the huge gains we made about 10 years ago, in history when there was a big gain for citizens it was followed by the big loss a short time later (look at the great depression...roaring 20's to the depression 30's followed by war 40's) so in the next 10 years or so we'll be in a BIG war and then we'll be ok for like 20 or 30 years cause the powers that be will make it this way, then we'll go to another junky war like vietnam and then 20 years later things will get crazy again with people making money off of this and that and then it will cycle over and over again......it's all about keeping the powers that be to be as powerful as they be
What in the world is going on with these gas prices? Is there nothing we as Americans and the other countries that are being ripped by opec can do to stop this gouging of prices? It seems to me to be a clear attempt to punish countries that are not a majority of muslims. Our congress seems to be failing us. What can we do as American Citizens to make a change, how can we make congress and senate listen to us. The citizens who make minimum wage or slightly above can hardly afford to live since everything from groceries to utilities have nearly doubled due to these high gas prices, and our incomes have not changed. It seems reminiscent of the depression when all the people were living in tents close to D.C. because they had lost everything they owned, I can see history repeating itself here, am I alone? If I could afford a new car that ran on something other than fossel fuel I would buy it.YET I am still a blue collar peon. I can hardly afford groceries. I want to know who or what to do to change the current situation
why cant anyone in our government do anything about high gas prices and taxes? i am starting to feel as if we are back in history and it's us being ruled by england again
Does anybody know a website where I can find the history of the average price for gas?? in the United States year by year?? thank you Merlyn - 10 points for u
How many think that President Bush is the worst president ever in the history of the United States? With all he has done in the past eight years or should I say, the little he has done for the people of this country, he shouldn't get away with it. Think Hurricane Katrina, Gulf War, and not making the oil companies accountable for the high gas prices while they make billions in profit.
Who agrees that Bush will go down as the most corrupt president in history? His family business is oil. Doesn't it seem odd that he started a war in an oil rich country? Also why in the last year of his second term did the gas prices go bonkers? Is he lining his and his oil buddies pockets before he loses power?
Does anyone get the feeling history is about to repeats itself? I mean honestly because the rising gas prices and people are losing their jobs we might be in another great depression anyone agree? or maybe im just paranoid.
Why are the gas prices going down? Do you think it has anything to do with the upcoming elections? Im sure that will be a big debating point. Arent we still using the same amount of oil as we did 6 months ago? not much was affected by the alaskan pipeline seeing as most of our oil is imported. i think its bush and his cronies that have their relations with the oil companies and manipulate the price. how esle did all the other oil execs earn more profit than ever b4 in history ?? Ok april_hwt how do you explain that some of our enviornmental policies are developed by the big oil comapnies? google it Yes it is possible that bush can manipulate the prices, but not Bush alone and his "magic button" it takes more than him. thats why i also said cronies. Sure aztec id love to show you. Why dont u name call and challenge people on something that isnt even possible. If there was evidence of this it would be kept very secret yes? hmmm your a douc he bag and shouldnt flame. Byrose awesom reply ! Thats the most sensible thing said yet Ok i understand supply and demand fluxuate due to season changes. But 7 years ago i never say it fluxuate 70 cents. the percentage is alot higher than it used to be.
what was the lowest gas price in USA and Canada? im talking about the lowest gas price in usa and canad of history....that will never ever ever be the same....
why should we lower gas prices???? i hate history and we need to debate this subject!
In 2001, did bush make a bet with cheney that he could raise gas prices to $5/gal, and that his supporters...? were so dumb, they would defend bush for it? Bush literally let the oil industry write America's energy policy in secret from Cheney's office weeks after he took office in 2001. The records of Cheney's "energy task force" meetings have been kept a secret to this day despite many lawsuits. In the 7 years since, gas is approaching $5/gal, while last year Exxon/Mobil set the record for the most profit ever made by any corporation in the history of the US, breaking its own record that it set the year before. It's former CEO, Lee Raymond, retired at the end of 2005 with a $400 million retirement package, also the largest in the history of any public US company. http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=1841989
what website could I get information on world gas price? I need help for history project. I need Malabo, Equatorial Guinea Suva, Fiji Bogota,Clombia Gas price
With gas prices soaring ever higher could this be the bass boat of the future? http://images.search.yahoo.com/images/view?back=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.search.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%2Fimages%3Fp%3Drowboat%26fr%3Dyfp-t-501%26toggle%3D1%26cop%3Dmss%26ei%3DUTF-8&w=657&h=504&imgurl=www.vaniercollege.qc.ca%2Faudiovisual%2Fslideshow%2Fslideshow151%2Fpaintings%2Fcarls_rowboat_w2.jpg&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.vaniercollege.qc.ca%2Faudiovisual%2Fslideshow%2Fslideshow151%2Fcarls_rowboat.html&size=72.9kB&name=carls_rowboat_w2.jpg&p=rowboat&type=JPG&oid=7249a3b9232fd88e&no=1&tt=32373 Funny or ironic, history does have a way of repeating itself. Last time you filled the tanks on your tow rig and boat how much did it cost? Mr T. do you mean one of these? http://www.hobiecat.com/fishing/models_sportfisherman.html
Something importatn about history? i have to do this huge report on something from history. but idk what to do. can someone just yelling out some ideas. it has to be from the 1960 era til now, like gas prices, iraq, ummm stuff like that. but i want it to really different, something very different. stuff that know one really knows about.
Neoconservative Matt Drudge blamed Al Gore for "high" gas prices in 2000. Oil had gone from under $20 a... barrel during the previous year to $30 barrel. Seven and a half years later with two rotten oilmen bush and cheney in office, oil has skyrocketed to $140 a barrel, and republicans are still blaming Democrats. http://www.buzzflash.com/articles/analysis/314 Do cons overlook the fact that the oil industry literally wrote America's energy policy in secret from cheney's office shortly after bush took office in 2001? Do cons overlook the fact that Exxon/Mobil set the record for the most profit ever made by any corporation in the history of the US, breaking its own record that it set the year before? Are cons overlooking the fact that Exxon/Mobil's former CEO, Lee Raymond, retired at the end of 2005 with a $400 million retirement package, also the largest in the history of any public US company? http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=1841989 Too bad cons didn't listen to the Democrats. Must cons always learn life's lessons the hard way? For instance, is being punished by the reality of $4.50/gal gas the only way for them to learn that buying their Hummer, a.k.a "the bushmobile", was as bad an idea as voting for bush, TWICE?

Why is Bush trying to fix the problems caused by the gas prices, (food prices, stimulating the economy).? But he won't tap into the oil reserve. Also why are the oil companies making bigger profits then ever, and nobody is saying anything. We are a country based on freedom, and Democracy, however we are getting screwed by our non majority elected leader. I'm so glad I was out of the miltary before Bush took office. In my opinion Bush is one of the 5 worst Presidents in our history. I needed to say what was on my mind. I would love to here your opinions on this subject, good or bad! I love the responces I've gotten(more then I,ve ever had, however I've lived for just over 40 years, and lived during the gas crises of the 70's, however, I don't think this is a party problem, like some have said Bushvis looking out for his Corporate interests, once again this is my opinion. The only reference I use is my own life experience. One last thing, by reserves, I'm talking about what we already have in reserve, not tapping into our natural resouces. Although we have more oil in our ground than most of the rest of he world combined, think about it, fossal fuel is caused by the dinosaurs, and we have some of the biggest sites in the world. and Alaska is our biggest untapped resource(not just for oil). Face it we need to fix our economy that s based more on oil than anything else, or find better alternative fuels, I know I sound Eco, however, we rely too much on other countries, and yet we have the greatest resources right here.
Isn“t this about the most exciting time in recent history? With everything going on, global warming, global cooling, nuclear war with Iran, Korea, prices of gas, food, and everything else rising, facing a world wide famine, violence on the increase everywhere. This has (to me) got to be one of the most unstable times in recent history. I would think that young people are pretty terrified about their future... What do you say, scary? or NO?
Are you as angry as I am about super high gas prices? It angers me that those greedy oil companies are getting greedier. If I had it my way, the electric car would be used right now. Sure, the hybrid is cool, but we have the full potential to use a car that relies on ZERO fuel. Morons. I swear when people in 1000 years look back on our history they'll say "what a bunch of retards, they could have used electric cars all along." For Quiktruck: I did take economics in college. I understand there are more factors...but which side are you on? If you want to pay $5.00/gallon for gas by next year, why don't you pay it, while the rest of us find cheaper ways of transportation. Asshole.
Are oil prices being manipluated? Oil and gas prices set new record highs every day. With the increases comes the oil companies and governments explanation as to why. For years the reasons centered on refiner fires or breakdowns, or barges loosing supplies, etc. Now they have pending wars but we are not hearing any of the old reasons. Does this not bring suspicions to the pricing? The oil companies are probably the greatest marketing experts in history! While we live with the companies excuses and pay the higher prices oil executives are making more and more money (can you believe some executives at a million + dollars a day?) Maybe it is time we go back to regulating the oil companies!
Why does history have to repeat itself? What happened when the Last Bush was in office?Followed by a Clinton? G.Bush in office, Country in a recession, at war, high unemployment, high gas prices. Now: G.W.Bush in office. Country screwed, goverment kickback, really high gas prices, Country in a recession, Country At war. Hope I don't lose my house. Life was good When Clinton in office, So what if Bill got a little on the side, it only hurts his family. He will most likely spend Hillery's term at Camp David with strippers and secret service
what do you think about growing hemp for gasoline now that prices for gas are so high? I have been watching a lot of documentaries on Veoh, Youtube and Google about hemp and marijuana. and I don't understand why our country has made it so illegal. there is so many things that we can use this stuff for( expecially gas ). watch the documentaries HEMP FOR VICTORY, HISTORY OF MARIJUANA and THE MARIJUANA CONSPIRACY. did you know that Henry Ford of Ford motors in 1941 made his first himp car. you can find this footage on google video under FORD HEMP CAR or you can go into HempUSA.org and find it along with many other videos about Hemp. I think hemp should be leagleized. I am hoping people will wake up and vote to leaglize hemp and marijuana. I think that marijuana should be leagle for the people who need it. why can't they regulate it just like the cigarette's and alcohol? there has never been a proven case where marijuana has been the leading cause of death like cigarette's and alcohol. I am hoping for positive answers to my questions. Please check out the sites.
where do you look for 1925,prices,rent,etc.for that time in history? our family is putting together a surprise party for my Moms 82 B/D.I'd like to do somthing special for her.I'm looking somthing nice/simple,like the prices for grocerys, gas, rent, cars, wages, etc.,somthing that I can print out.thanks!
