Why Are Gas Prices So High?

What is the turn around time for oil to get from the barrel to the gas pump?

I ask because when oil prices go up, gas prices go up. But aren't we paying for gas now that the oil companies bought by the barrel however long ago, and at however lower of a price? When oil companies are posting the most profits in the history of the world, something seems a bit wrong. I think this might be one of many factors to that.
