What are the least expensive cars that get the best gas mileage?

Can anyone name some cars that have good/great gas mileage and aren't super expensive to buy?

2. My dad has a 96' escort 5 speed. probably worth like 2,000 bucks now! haha but it gets 45 miles per gallon so if you can find one of those it'd be a good beater car that gets pretty dang good gas milage!
